Just like food, traditional meters are given a 'best before' date when they are made. This certification date is set by the Office for Product safety and Standards (OPSS). When a meter passes their 'best before' date, we have to replace them.
I've received an email saying my meter needs replacing, what should I do?
If we have been in touch to say your meter has expired, you should use the button in the email to schedule an appointment slot. Alternatively, you can call SMS plc on 0330 135 9954 who will book an appointment to get your meters replaced.
Why do I need to have my meter replaced?
It is incredibly important that your meter is working correctly so we receive accurate readings. As meters get older, they may start to run too fast or too slow which may have an impact on the readings you send to us and ultimately impact your bill.
This is why the OPSS have health and safety requirements in place to prevent this from happening.
Do you have to replace my meter?
As a responsible supplier, we must adhere to governmental regulations which mean, when a certification date has expired or is close to expiring, we must replace your meter so your energy supply continues to be accurately recorded.
Why are you replacing my traditional meter with a smart one?
The governing body of the energy industry, Ofgem, have specific requirements when it comes to replacing meters. Under their New and Replacement Obligation, energy suppliers must do their best to install smart meters for all new connections and replacements.
As the industry looks to reinvent its current infrastructure with smart devices, installing traditional meters are now much harder to find and install.

Will I have to pay for the upgrade?
There are no costs for installing a smart meter, it is paid for as part of everyone's energy bills.
Installations usually take around two hours, very speedy for a brand new meter, right!
